Summer Solstice (XIAZHI JIEQI)

Summer Solstice represents the midpoint of the summer season in the Chinese seasonal calendar. Before this phase, summer tends to lean towards cool, and after this seasonal phase summer tend to lean towards hot. We have reached the sweet and balanced part of summer that feels just right.

The summer solstice is the astronomical event that coincides with the longest day and the shortest night of the year. If we compare the yearly seasonal cycle with the daily cycle and set a marker between the first day of spring and dawn, then Summer Solstice corresponds to the bright noontime sun. During midday and Summer Solstice, sunlight rules the world and shadows shrink into insignificance. The theme of Summer Solstice is the glorious triumph of light over dark.

Qigong is rooted in the simple notion that by aligning our bodyminds with nature, our lives flow organically, and by that principle, Summer Solstice is the most appropriate time of the year to adopt a positive and lighthearted attitude and enjoy the world in the way that you would enjoy the perfect summer day.

Picture yourself walking under a yellow sun and blue sky surrounded by green trees and colorful flowers. The moment is so lovely that you want to soak more of it in. Your senses are wide open, and feeling into the moment, you smile. That simple act of curling your lips in the face of frivolous happiness captures the essence of Summer Solstice.

Now is the time to open your senses wide and to soak in the abundant goodness that surrounds you. Let the world delight you. Bask in the radiance and take in the pleasure of being alive. Savor the moment. The high wisdom of Summer Solstice is this: Life is good, enjoy it.

Doing the Summer Solstice Empowerment on Wednesday, June 21st between 12:24 AM EDT and 2:24 AM EDT will boost your energy level and fill you with more joy to enjoy this time of the year. (Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone).  Summer Solstice lasts until Thursday, July 6th at 5:50 PM EDT when Minor Heat, the fifth stage of summer begins. Until then, delight in the light!

STEP 1: LOCATE T5

The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Thoracic 5 (T5) in the upper back.

The big vertebra at the base of your neck is Cervical 7 (C7). Below it is Thoracic 1 (T1) Count down four vertebrae to locate T5.

Find T5 now.

STEP 2: SPINAL MEDITATION

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Wednesday, June 21st between 12:24 AM - 2:24 AM EDT)

Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to T5. Exhale and visualize T5 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on T5, exhale and visualize the light from T5 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

STEP 3: SPINAL MOVEMENT EXERCISE

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.

  1. Sit with your knees bent, wrap your arms around your knees and interlock your fingers of both hands.
  2. Then hold your right foot and straighten your arms. Inhale, relax your right foot and leg, and exhale, stretch your right foot against both hands and allow the force to stretch your arms and all the way to your shoulder blades and your spine.
  3. Repeat the same sequence on the other side.
  4. Gently bite your teeth 36 times. Then swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is full of saliva. Swallow and send the energy of your saliva down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.

Enjoy your practice!
