On Tuesday, August 22nd, the fourteenth phase of the Chinese seasonal calendar begins. This phase, Limit of Heat (Chushu), starts at 6:20 PM EDT as the sun crosses 150° Longitude (0° Virgo). Limit of Heat (CHUSHU JIEQI)



Limit of Heat is the second of the six stages of autumn, and by the time we enter the second stage of any season we can begin to discern its defining characteristics appearing at the start or the end of the day. In fact, over the next two weeks it will still be “hot” while the sun is out, but if you ventured outdoors at around dawn or dusk, you would notice coolness and darkness chipping away at daylight and warmth.

During spring and summer, while the power of the sun is waxing, we align with the energies of nature by tending towards the Yang qualities of expansion and extraversion. But at this stage of the seasonal cycle, the sun is already waning, and we harmonize with nature by reorienting towards the Yin qualities such as inwardness and groundedness. During Limit of Heat, you are invited to contemplate  those neglected aspects of your life that would benefit from self-analysis.  But how can we identify those issues in the first place? 

In Chinese medicine, autumn is the season associated with the Earth element which governs the stomach, and as you shall soon see, your stomach is the leading indicator that will guide you to those aspects of your life worthy of attention. 

Picture yourself on a roller coaster that is zooming upwards. The sky’s the limit! As you reach the summit, the roller coaster slows down, stalls… and then, as  you begin the downward slide, a sensation forms in the pit of your stomach. If we wanted to express Limit of Heat as a sensation, the initial tug felt as the roller coaster begins its descent would be it. 

Now, recall the feeling of being a high school student on summer break and realizing, at about this time of the year, that the lazy and fun days of summer vacation are ending and that classes will be starting up again soon. Didn’t that realization trigger the same tug in the pit of your stomach that you experience on the roller coaster as it dips down? In the language of bodily sensations, the “roller coaster” stomach feeling signals the time to sober up in anticipation of demanding work that lies around the corner.  

Whenever that sensation arises during Limit of Heat, pay special attention. The universe is pointing out the circumstance tugging at your gut and indicating that the issue requires attention. With respect to that issue, you harmonize with the seasonal cycle through reflection and by letting practical sensibility be your guiding light. 

I encourage you to practice the Limit of Heat Empowerment on Tuesday, August 22nd between 6:20 PM EDT and 8:20 PM EDT. This empowerment practice will boost your energy level and help you harmonize with nature of the seasonal cycle. (Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone). Limit of Heat continues until Thursday, September 7th at 6:38 AM EDT when White Dew, the third stage of autumn begins. Until then,remain on the lookout for any nuggets of wisdom arising from the pit of your gut.

STEP 1: LOCATE T1


The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Thoracic 1 (T1) in the upper back.

The big vertebra at the base of your neck is Cervical 7 (C7). Below it is Thoracic 1 (T1)

Find T1 now.



















STEP 2: SPINAL MEDITATION

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Tuesday, August 22nd between 6:20 PM - 8:20 PM EDT)


Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to T1. Exhale and visualize T1 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on T1, exhale and visualize the light from T1 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

STEP 3: SPINAL MOVEMENT EXERCISE

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.


  1. Sit cross legged and rest your hands on your lower back.
  2. Inhale, turn your head towards the upper left side, then hold your breath while staring upward. And exhale, hit your lower back lightly 9 times with loose fists while returning your head towards the front and relax. 
  3. Then inhale, turn your head towards the upper right side, then hold your breath while staring upward. And exhale, hit your lower back lightly 9 times with loose fists while returning your head towards the front and relax.
  4. Repeat step 2-3 for 36 times.
  5. Gently tap your teeth 36 times. Then swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is full of saliva. Swallow and send the energy of your saliva down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.
