White Dew (BAILU JIEQI)



White Dew is the third of the six cycles of the fall season. By the time we reach the third stage of any season, the qualities of the previous season diminish noticeably. Over the next two weeks, you may still encounter the lingering warmth of summer, especially around midday, but the dry and cool autumn air will become increasingly prominent.  

During White Dew, dusk is followed by a rapid dip in temperature. The nip of night condenses moisture from the air resulting in morning dew. As the humidity is “wrung” from the atmosphere like water from towel, the sky also grows clearer. Clarity is the theme associated with White Dew and by generating more clarity in your life, you will align with nature and come into greater harmony with the cosmic flow.

Psychologically, you align with White Dew by “wringing” out excess sentimentality and wishful thinking from your mind. If you are asked for your opinion, speak the truth as clearly as possible. Don’t let other people’s feelings steer you away from the sensible facts. Now is the time to take an inventory of your strengths and weaknesses without exaggerating the former or diminishing the latter. 

In order to become more productive, consider your own foibles and take action to rectify those shortcomings. And since the truth about oneself can sting, you are best served by adopting an attitude of deep humility and tolerance. The point is to use clarity as a springboard for increased efficiency and self-improvement, not as a bludgeon for self-criticism.

On a physical level, you align with White Dew by nurturing your lungs. Every time you inhale, the cool dryness of autumn enters your body and just as external moisture gets squeezed out of the external atmosphere it will get squeezed out of your lungs. Back home, during this time of the year, my mother used to stew chicken with longan fruit and a little honey to balance out the dryness of autumn and nourish the lungs. Even now, as I recall the fragrance of her cooking, I am transported back to my youth. Balance out the dryness of autumn by introducing warm, moist foods into your diet like soups. Other healthy autumn foods include tofu, tempeh, soymilk, and eggs. Autumn seasonings include garlic, bay leaves, leeks, ginger, and capers. 

Another way to strengthen your lungs in anticipation of the cooler drier season weather ahead is to practice the White Dew Empowerment on Thursday, September 7th between 6:38 AM EDT and 8:38 AM EDT as the sun crosses 165° Longitude (15° Virgo).  Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone. The window for this practice lasts two hours. During this time the powerful energies will flood the planet, and if your raise your sails at this time, the cosmic winds will carry you far.

White Dew lasts fifteen days until Friday, September 22nd at 4:01 PM EDT when the fourth stage of autumn (Autumn Equinox) begins. Until then, breathe in clear the air and clear your mind.

STEP 1: LOCATE C7


The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Cervical 7 (C7) in the neck.

The big vertebra at the base of your neck is Cervical 7 (C7).

STEP 2: SPINAL MEDITATION

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Thursday, September 7th between 6:38 AM - 8:38 AM EDT)


Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to C7. Exhale and visualize C7 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on C7, exhale and visualize the light from C7 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

STEP 3: SPINAL MOVEMENT EXERCISE

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.


  1. Sit cross legged, rest your palms on your knees.
  2. Inhale, turn your head towards the upper left side, then hold your breath while staring upward. And exhale, return your head towards the front and relax. 
  3. Then inhale, turn your head towards the upper right side, then hold your breath while staring upward. And exhale, return your head towards the front and relax.
  4. Repeat step 2-3 for 36 times.
  5. Swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is full of saliva. Then, swallow and send the energy of your saliva down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.
