Major Snow (DAXUE JIEQI)



Major Snow is the third of the six phases of winter, and as we course through the “midpoint” of winter, a unique aspect of the season manifests more fully in nature. Over the next fifteen days, the rising tide of darkness will increasingly blanket the Northern Hemisphere as we approach the winter solstice—the point where day is shortest and night is longest.  


Accordingly, the theme of this seasonal phase is darkness, and the meaning of Major Snow resonates with the qualities evoked by the absence of light. In the summertime, there is an abundance and light and during this season it is appropriate to be confident and to take bold action in the face of the unknown. Summertime and risk share the same nature. But the unknown brooding inside winter darkness beckons caution. In the grip of winter, with a limited food supply, bounded by cold, threatened by harsh life conditions and surrounded by darkness, one emotion emerged organically above all other in the historical past—fear.


Fear, like all other emotions, can manifest both in a healthy and in an unhealthy way. Wedded to awareness, fear guides us to wisdom by inspiring strategic thinking and calculated timing.  Fear informed wisdom thinks twice and consults with intuition before taking appropriate action. It stacks the odds in its favor before enacting a plan of action. But without wisdom to guide fear, that same emotion can freeze action and paralyze growth. The function of fear is to caution action and to help us time events carefully, and not to negate activity. And if wisdom informs you to refrain from taking action right now, then fear transforms into the virtue of patience. Caution and patience are the wise expressions of winter darkness. 


Now is the time of the year to leverage darkness by cautiously engaging those aspects of life that usually fill you with dread or fear. By moving in resonance with this principle, you come into harmony with the quality of the season, befriend darkness, and make an ally out of fear.


Powerful cosmic energies are released by the universe on Wednesday, December 6th between 5:32 PM EST and 7:32 PM EST just as Major Snow begins. By doing the Major Snow  empowerment which is described below during this time frame, you boost your energies and integrate the energy of the season. (Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone). 


Major Snow lasts until Thursday, December 21st at 11:27 AM EST when Winter Solstice, the next seasonal phase, begins. Until then, navigate the unknown with wisdom and darkness will cautiously guide you to higher wisdom.

STEP 1: LOCATE C1


The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Cervical 1 (C1) in the neck.

C1 is the topmost vertebra, the one that connects the vertebral column to the head. Find C1 now.

STEP 2: SPINAL MEDITATION

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Wednesday, December 6th between 5:32 PM - 7:32 PM EST)


Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to C1. Exhale and visualize C1 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on C1, exhale and visualize the light from C1 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

STEP 3: SPINAL MOVEMENT EXERCISE

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.


  1. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Then raise your arms to shoulder height, palms facing outwards.
  2. Inhale, and step forward with your left foot, while tensing and extending both arms sideways at shoulder level. You should feel the tension on your palms and fingers and the soft tissue surrounding C1 tightening. And exhale, and step back to starting position as you release the tension on your arms, palms, and neck. (Watch the video above.)
  3. Repeat the same movement with right foot. 
  4. Repeat steps 2-3 alternatively for 36 times.
  5. Swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is running with saliva. Then, swallow the saliva, and send the energy of your saliva down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.
