Minor Cold (XIAOHAN JIEQI)

Last seasonal phase,Winter Solstice, we reached the “midnight” hour of the year—the point in the seasonal cycle when the Yin force culminates. In this newsletter we delve into the meaning of the next seasonal phase, Minor Cold, and explore how you can leverage the energy abounding in nature at this time to transform your life.

The Yin Yang diagram depicted above is a useful symbol that can help us understand the energies currently arising in the cycle of nature. The black part of the diagram represents the Yin half of the year while the white part represents the Yang half. Notice that Minor Cold represents the first phase of the year to unfold in Yang territory.

Over the next two seasonal cycles, we will experience the coldest part of the year, but even as the temperature continues to plummet, energetically we are already heading towards springtime and summer. The vision of green trees and blooming flower fields may seem distant, but in actuality, the Yang force is already chipping away at the juggernaut of winter. If you picture the journey from winter to summer as a road trip from Canada to Florida, then we may still be way up north near Montreal, but we are heading south towards Miami.

Minor Cold embodies the initial seasonal push against the strong headwinds of winter. To align with the Qi energies emerging at this time, you too must be prepared to project your will in the face of adversity and push with all your might against any seemingly irresistible forces blocking your path. Don’t allow harsh external conditions to discourage you. Embody the spirit of this seasonal phase by summoning your resilience, assertiveness, and strength. Let the world know how tough you really are!

If you experience any setbacks over the next two weeks, transform your disappointment into Yang Qi and use that energy to drive harder towards your goal.  Welcome pressure, opposition, and resistance as the opportunity to develop energetic “core” strength. Whatever the outcome, people will notice your steadfastness and respect your effort.

Practicing the Minor Cold empowerment on Friday, January 5th between 4:48 AM EST and 6:48 AM EST will empower your will and strengthen your resolve. (Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone). The Minor Cold seasonal phase lasts until Friday, January 19th at 10:08 PM EST when Major Cold, the sixth and final cycle of winter begins. Until then, remain strong and push with buoyant determination against the resistance you encounter.

STEP 1: LOCATE L4

The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Lumbar 4 (L4) in the lower back.

Begin by identifying the iliac crest, the topmost part of your hips and trace a straight line to your spine. That vertebra is L4.

Find L4 now.

STEP 2: SPINAL MEDITATION

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Friday, January 5th between 4:48 AM - 6:48 AM EST)

Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to L4. Exhale and visualize L4 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on L4, exhale and visualize the light from L4 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

STEP 3: SPINAL MOVEMENT EXERCISE

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.

  1. Sit with your right thigh on your left heel, place your left hand on your right sole, and your right hand above your head.
  2. Inhale, relax, then hold your breath and look up at your right arm as yo stretch it above your head while holding your breath. And exhale, release the tension of your right arm and look in front. Repeat this movement 36 times.
  3. Repeat step 1 and 2 on the other side 36 times.
  4. Swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is full of saliva. Then, swallow and send the energy  down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.

Enjoy your practice!
