Grain Rain (GUYU JIEQI)

In this edition of the newsletter we will explore the meaning of Grain Rain, the final stage of spring according to the Chinese seasonal calendar. First, we consider the transformation nature undergoes during Grain Rain, and then, we explore how you can awaken those qualities in order to align with the movement of life.

If you picture the earth as a pie baking inside the cosmic oven, then Grain Rain represents the time of the year (on the Northern Hemisphere) when the crust grows warmer. Over the next fifteen days, as the temperature continues to rise, the surface of the earth will become noticeably toastier. If you walk barefoot before Grain Rain the ground still feels nippy. After Grain Rain, the ground feels comfortable to a pair a bare feet.

As the surface temperature of the earth rises so does the surface temperature of the oceans. During Grain Rain, water begins to evaporate, and as a result humidity, rainfall increase. The distinctive characteristic of Grain Rain is the warming and moistening of the earth which primes the ground for planting.

At the individual level, the “ground” symbolizes stability. “He’s standing on shaky ground.” “She’s standing on solid ground.” We use expressions relating to the ground to indicate the level of support we feel relative to a specific situation. Psychologically, our “ground” refers to our level of confidence. The image of standing on quicksand evokes a sense of hopelessness while the image of standing on solid bedrock inspires self-assurance. As you venture forth and manifest the vision you have developed over the last few seasonal phases, it is essential for the ground you tread to be supportive, solid, and reliable.

Grain Rain is the time of the year to connect with the Earth Qi rising from the ground. Let this energy mesh with your springtime vision. Stand your ground comfortably and allow your confidence to guide your actions towards greater stability, security, and peace of mind. Do this now and you’ll be ready to move into the first phase of summer believing in yourself and impressing others with a vision of your success.

I encourage you to practice the Grain Rain Empowerment on Thursday, April 19th between 11:12 PM EST and 1:12 AM EST. (Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone). Doing this practice will boost your energy level and help you realize your goals. On Saturday, May 5th at 9:25 AM EST a new seasonal phase begins, Start of Summer. On that date a new energetic pattern will orient the rhythm of nature. Between now and then, walk barefoot on the warming ground and grow confidence under your feet.

The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Thoracic 9 (T9) in the middle back.

The vertebra opposite your navel is L2. One up is L1. One up is T12. One up is T11. One up is T10. One up is T9.

Find T9 now.

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Thursday, April 19th between 11:12 PM - 1:12 AM EST)

Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to T9. Exhale and visualize T9 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on T9, exhale and visualize the light from T9 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.

  1. Sit cross-legged resting your hands on both sides of the body.
  2. Raise your right palm high above your head, fingers pointing towards your left side. Meanwhile raise your left hand until your palm is facing your chest. Then inhale, slightly turn your head to the left and look on the floor on your left side, while stretching your right arm upwards, and exhale, return your head to the front and relax your arm. Repeat 36 times.
  3. Repeat the same sequence on the other side.
  4. Gently bite your teeth 36 times. Then swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is full of saliva. Swallow and send the energy of your saliva down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.

Enjoy your practice!
