Major Heat (DASHU JIEQI)

The time of the seasonal cycle that coincides with Major Heat represents the hottest time of the year. Over the next fifteen days, streets will become ovens, and if you live in New York City, subway stations will become saunas. Intense heat is the quality that characterizes this seasonal cycle, and to grasp the meaning of Major Heat we turn our attention to the source of all this heat, the sun.

Every month we get a bill from the utility company for the energy that we use in our homes. But we don’t get a bill from the Sun for the energy that the planet consumes, and so it is easy to forget the awesome power emitted by the sun. During Major Heat, the sun reminds us of its power.

At the level of nature, the sun’s heat represents the energy source that drives the engine of life.  But in what form does solar power manifest at the human level? What is the ultimate source of human power? Is it strength? Creativity? Intelligence? No, there is a deeper power that underlies all of those qualities. Love.

Love is the dominant force that directs our lives. When we are inspired by love, our strength peaks. It is when we love an activity, truly and deeply, that our creative energies crest. It is when we love a subject profoundly that our natural intelligence culminates. It is when we love another human being that we project our best qualities and virtues into the world.

An obvious but often neglected aspect of love is that the more we do something that we love, the more we want to do it. When you love something, you can’t get enough of it. The secret of love’s power is that love feeds on itself. When we experience love, we tap into an inexhaustible supply of energy that arises from within and we become like the sun: tireless transmitters of warmth and light.

There is a time every year when nature encourages us to rekindle our capacity for love, and we have reached that moment. What do you really love? Ask yourself the question sincerely. Now is the time to embrace the object of your love and to shine more love into the world.

Where in your body do we feel love? Think back to your first love, where did that person’s presence touch you? Here’s a hint: boom-boom, boom-boom. The organ that registers love is the heart. Every season is associated with an organ and an emotional quality. Summer is the season of the heart and the emotions linked to summer are love and joy. The logic of nature that links macrocosm and microcosm unto a seamless whole suggests that right now, the universe is ripe for the expression of your love.

I encourage you to do the Major Heat Empowerment on Saturday, July 22nd between 11:15 AM EDT and 1:15 PM EDT. The practice will increase your energy level and enhance your capacity for love and joy. (Remember to adjust for the time difference if you live in another time zone).  Major Heat lasts until Monday, August 7th at 3:40 AM EDT when Start of Autumn, the first stage of autumn begins. Until then, embody summertime and shine the Love Qi-stored in your heart into the world.

STEP 1: LOCATE T3

The spine is made up of five segments including the coccyx, the lower back (sacral and lumbar spine), the middle and upper back (thoracic spine), and the neck (cervical spine).

The vertebra associated with this empowerment is Thoracic 3 (T3) in the upper back.

The big vertebra at the base of your neck is Cervical 7 (C7). Below it is Thoracic 1 (T1) Count down two vertebrae to find T3.

Find T3 now.

STEP 2: SPINAL MEDITATION

(You can practice this empowerment every day until the next Jieqi, but the golden time is on Saturday, July 22nd between 11:15 AM - 1:15 PM EDT)

Once every 15 days, the sun crosses over "power spot" and a wave of powerful cosmic energy is released. The purpose of this empowerment is to concentrate this energy into your spine and internal organs.

  1. Sit comfortably or lie down and relax every part of your body.
  2. Inhale through all the pores of your skin, collect universal Qi energy and concentrate this energy to T3. Exhale and visualize T3 glowing brightly. Continue this breathing patterns 36 times.
  3. Then, inhale, focus on T3, exhale and visualize the light from T3 spreading throughout your body, to your spine, your bones, and to your internal organs. Repeat 36 times.
  4. Finally, inhale and collect the light and energy from all over your body into your Lower Dantian which is located three finger widths below your navel in the center of your body. Then exhale and concentrate the energy there. Repeat three times. Then, relax, and nourish your Qi, feeling like a sponge soaking in a warm tub of water. Maintain this state for as long as you want.

STEP 3: SPINAL MOVEMENT EXERCISE

(Practice this exercise once a day until the next seasonal phase begins)

The purpose of this exercise is to strengthen the soft tissue surrounding the vertebra associated with the current empowerment. Every 15 days we focus on a specific vertebra and over the course of the year we tonify the whole spine. Be gentle and don't strain your back.

  1. Sit cross legged, form your hands into fists and rest them on the ground in front of you.
  2. Inhale, shift your body weight on your fists and turn your head to the left, looking at the sky on your left side. And exhale, turn your head to the front and shift your body weight back to your bottom. Repeat 15 times.
  3. Repeat the same sequence on the other side.
  4. Gently bite your teeth 36 times. Then swoosh your tongue around your mouth until it is full of saliva. Swallow and send the energy of your saliva down to your Lower Dantian. Repeat three times.

Enjoy your practice!
