Tofu Steak

Golden-seared tofu in a light, savory sauce with mushrooms, ginger, and aromatic vegetables—simple, nourishing, and comforting. A versatile dish finished with fresh herbs and perfect for a wholesome meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 Block Tofu

  • Salt

  • Pepper

  • Cooking oil

Optional Coating

  • Starch (any type)

  • 1 Egg

For the Sauce

  • Mushrooms, chopped

  • Finely chopped meat or ground meat (beef, chicken, lamb, or turkey)

  • Ginger, finely chopped

  • Shallot, finely chopped

  • Aromatic vegetables: celery or fennel, finely chopped

  • Hot water

  • Vegetarian stock or chicken stock (optional, as a substitute for hot water)

Optional Finish

  • Starch slurry to thicken sauce

  • Parsley, cilantro, or green onions, chopped

Method

1. Prepare Tofu

Cut one block of tofu into six pieces. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and set aside.

2. Optional Coating

Lightly dust tofu with starch, dip into beaten egg, then set aside.

3. Sear Tofu

Heat oil in a pan. Place tofu in the pan and sear until both sides develop a golden color. Remove and set aside.

4. Cook Mushrooms and Meat

Add more oil to the pan if needed. Add ginger and shallot first and sauté until fragrant.

Add chopped mushrooms and a little salt, letting the mushrooms sweat and release their juices.

Then add finely chopped or ground meat and sauté together until the meat changes color.

5. Add Aromatic Vegetables

Add celery or fennel and let them sweat briefly with the mushrooms and meat.

6. Simmer Sauce

Pour hot water into the pan and let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes.

7. Return the Tofu

Put the tofu back into the pan. Simmer about 3 minutes on each side so the tofu absorbs the sauce.

Finish

Transfer tofu to a plate

  • Serve as it is, or

  • Thicken the sauce with starch or cream and pour over the tofu.

Garnish

  • Sprinkle parsley, cilantro, or green onions on top. Serve.

A QUIET DETAIL

For a lighter variation, replace the meat with root vegetables such as carrots or potatoes.
